Finance minister suspends SEC DG, Gwarzo, over corruption allegations

The Minister of Finance , Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, on Wednesday announced the suspension of the Director -General of the Securities and Exchange Commission , Mounir Gwarzo, over allegations of financial impropriety levelled against him.
Also suspended were two management staff members of the commission.
They are the Head of the Media Division , Mr. Abdulsalam Naif; and the Head of Legal Department, Mrs . Anastasia Braimoh . They were also alleged to have engaged in financial impropriety.
Adeosun, according to a statement signed by the Deputy Director of Press in the Ministry of Finance , Mrs. Patricia Deworitshe, said the suspension was to allow for unhindered investigations of the allegations levelled against the embattled DG and the two other officials .
The minister stated that the suspension was in line with the Public Service Rules 03405 and 03406 .
Adeosun, according to the statement , has also set up an administrative panel of inquiry to investigate and determine the culpability of the suspended DG .
She also directed the suspended DG to immediately hand over to the most senior officer at the commission, whom our correspondent gathered was one Abdul Zubair, the Director of Corporate Affairs , pending the conclusion of investigation by the API.
The statement read in part , “ The Minister of Finance , Mrs . Kemi Adeosun, has suspended the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr . Mounir Gwarzo , from office to allow for an unhindered investigation of several allegations of financial impropriety levelled against the director -general.

Gremio edge clear in Copa Libertadores final

Substitute Cicero scored the only goal as Brazilian side Gremio defeated Argentina's Lanus 1-0 in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores final on Wednesday.
A stormy encounter in Porto Alegre was settled seven minutes from time when Cicero pounced on a headed knockdown by Jael.

Emmerson Mnangagwa: Zimbabwe witnessing new democracy

Zimbabwe is entering a new era of democracy, incoming leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has said in his first public remarks since his return to the country.
The 75-year-old, whose sacking as vice president earlier in November triggered a military takeover, flew back to Zimbabwe on Wednesday, a day after longtime President Robert Mugabe stepped down.
Mnangagwa fled to South Africa after his dismissal, citing threats to his life.
He will be sworn in as president on Friday.
"Today, we are witnessing the beginning of a new and unfolding democracy," Mnangagwa told thousands of jubilant supporters at the headquarters of the ruling ZANU-PF party in the capital, Harare.
"We want to grow our economy, we want jobs," he added.
"All patriotic Zimbabweans (should) come together, work together."
Al Jazeera's Fahmida Miller, reporting from the gathering at the ZANU-PF headquarters, said Mnangagwa's speech was "very much about Zimbabwean people".

Obiano Mourns Ekwueme

The Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Maduaburochukwu Obiano has described the demise of the former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme as a huge loss to Nigeria.

Reacting to the news of the death from his Aguleri country home where he had gone to mark his victory in the last Saturday’s election with his family, Governor Obiano said that he was yet to come to terms with the reality of Dr Ekwueme’s death as it was hard to contemplate the void that his passage has created.
“A great iroko has fallen. Nigeria has lost a statesman. Ndigbo have lost an illustrious son. Anambra has lost a father. But I have lost both a father and a friend. I have lost a mentor. This is a big loss on all fronts,” the Governor declared.
Narrating the direct influence the late statesman had had on him, Governor Obiano further said, “I was close to Dr Ekwueme. I sought his advice on so many things and he was always ready to help. He attended every major event we have held in the past three years in our efforts to make Anambra a better place. You always knew where you stood with him on any issue. His death is a big personal loss to me,” Governor Obiano explained.

Anambra poll: Ojukwu dumps APGA for APC

Mr Emeka Ojukwu jnr , son of the founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance , late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu , has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress.
Ojukwu jnr made his declaration on Wednesday in Awka, at the grand finale campaign of the APC candidate for the Anambra 2017 governorship election, Dr Tony Nwoye.
President Muhammadu Buhari , APC National Chairman , Chief John Odigie -Oyegun, 12 APC governors , National Assembly members in the party , among other party bigwigs, witnessed the event.
According to him , his decision to join the party was to protect the interest of the Igbos.
Ojukwu jnr , who was adorned in a toga of his new party , said it was time for the people of the South-East region to move from “the recession of the periphery to the centre. ”
“It is time to leave the shadows for light. Every now and then, they come out with my father ’ s shadow to confuse the people , ” he said .
According to him , APGA is a means to an end but not an end itself.
He said the reason why his father joined the National Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic was to ensure that Igbo people remained in the mainstream of Nigerian politics.
“Mr President, I am proud to stand here today in support of you and in solidarity with the APC and our candidate , Tony Nwoye, ” he added .
The APC national chairman presented the party symbol to him and described the rally as “another historic campaign. ”
Oyegun recalled that Buhari made history when he unseated the incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, saying that the same feat would be achieved in Anambra 2017 governorship election.
The national chairman urged the people of the state to vote en mass for the party and Nwoye at the Saturday poll.

[BREAKING] Senate indicts CBN over MTN’s alleged $13.9bn repatriation

The Senate has blamed the Central Bank of Nigeria in its investigation of the alleged illegal repatriation of $ 13. 9 bn by the telecommunication giant, MTN .
Adopting the report by the Committee on Banking , Insurance and Other Financial Institutions on the probe at the plenary on Wednesday , the Senate accused the CBN of laxity , leading to sharp practices by commercial banks.
The chamber had, in October 2016, begun a probe into the allegation that MTN illegally transferred a total sum of $ 13. 9 bn from Nigeria to other countries between 2006 and 2016.
The Senate panel had summoned the CBN, MTN management, the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria , three commercial banks and some businessmen over alleged violation of the Foreign Exchange ( Monitoring and Miscellaneous ) Act to a public hearing where they made counter-claims.
The recommendations by the panel were unanimously approved by the lawmakers .
They include , to “condemn the Central Bank of Nigeria for failing in its duty to bring forth those observed deficiencies of FEMMA for amendment rather than granting extensions and exemptions , which became prone to abuses .
“Mandate the CBN to sanction Stanbic IBTC for improper documentations in respect of capital repatriation and loan repayments amounting to $ 388, 195 , 183 and $ 199, 440 , 952:07 , respectively.
“Mandate the CBN to sanction the activities of Stanbic IBTC Nominees in the matter of shares transfer and splitting for the purpose of dividend repatriation.
“Mandate the CBN to come up with a proposal for the amendment of FEMMA, with a view to ensuring the growth of the economy through massive foreign capital inflow and greater retention of foreign exchange . The amendment is still ongoing in the Senate.

Yul Edochie Unveils Emeka Okonkwo As His Running Mate

Nollywood actor and Democratic People’s Congress (DPC) governorship candidate for the Anambra election, Yul Edochie, has unveiled his running mate.
The running mate is Emeka Okonkwo, a graduate of Mechanical and Production Engineer of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka
At a ceremony held at the Central School field, Umunnachi, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, the son of legendary actor Pete Edochie, promised to operate an all-inclusive government.
