After announcing its release just yesterday, Taylor Swift has dropped “Gorgeous,” the second official single from her upcoming album Reputation.
The song sees Taylor returning to writing about the topics that made her a star in the first place, mostly, boys. The only thing that immediately separates "Gorgeous" from anything she's put out before and this era is the production, which is simultaneously a basic 808 drum and an attempt at something that pushes electro-pop into a more interesting territory than Top 40 is used to, but it doesn't quite get there. "Gorgeous" could have been written five years ago, and it doesn't seem to feature the same growth that her last single did (whether you like it or not). Last time around, the second single was "Blank Space," which bolted to No. 1 and produced one of the most iconic music videos of her career, but it's tough to imagine "Gorgeous" surviving the winter.
The pop star revealed that a new piece of music was on its way yesterday afternoon by uploading three items to her Instagram page, which is how she has been making many of her most important announcements during this era of her career. At the time, she shared a very short snippet of "Gorgeous" which featured what sounds like a baby saying the name of the song before a bit of an electronic beat kicks in.
“Gorgeous” follows in the footsteps of two other tracks Swift has thus far shared from her new album, which is slated to drop on November 10—less than a month from now. First up was electroclash banger “Look What You Made Me Do,” which dropped in late August, making perhaps the biggest immediately splash of any song in recent memory. The track was easily the most highly-anticipated of 2017, and people around the world rushed to hear what she had come up with this time around.
